Assuming you’re not happy with the method of installing new applications on your iPhone or iPod touch, there are several options for ‘Pwning’ or ‘JailBreaking’ your device, which is a nerdy way of saying you want to temporarily break the installed software to allow it to accept third party software, applications or settings not currently supported or approved by Apple.
The good news is, if you’re on a Mac it’s pretty simple. Bear in mind two things; This method does not work on the iPhone 3G for unlocking, only iPhones running 2.1 software can be unlocked. Additionally, if you use this method and your phone is bricked, ie. becomes unusable as Apple intended, they will not provide any support whatsoever.
1. Backup your iPhone/iPod touch.
2. Quit iTunes.
3. Disconnect your iPhone/iPod.
4. Download the current Pwnage Tool.
5. Do not use the older versions!
6. Download iPhone 3G OS 2.1. Download the original iPhone OS 2.1 here.
7. Use Firefox, NOT Safari to download the OS software.
8. Move the software to this folder:
~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
9. Start the Pwnage Tool application.
10. Follow on-screen instructions form here – use simple mode if in doubt!
