Apple’s iPhone launches in UAE and Saudi Arabia

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

The iPhone 3G has officially been launched in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, Etisalat announced today.

The 8GB version costs up to AED2,646 ($720) on a one-year contract with a AED199 ($54) monthly rental charge, and the 16GB costs up to AED3,090 ($841), also with a monthly rental fee of AED199, with the packages on both phones including 125 minutes of national calls a month, 125 texts and 500MB of data.

Etisalat is selling the device unlocked, meaning owners can use the phone on the du network and with other international operators. But customers wishing to cancel their contract will be required to pay penalty fees.

Sales staff at Etisalat outlets said customers who already own the new generation of iPhones, acquired overseas or through grey-market importers, can switch to the special iPhone packages without buying a new handset. They also said customers can switch between the different pricing plans.

iPhone Users Report Sync Problems After 2.2.1 Update

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Several reports have pointed to problems with iTunes crashing after installing the v2.2.1 firmware update on the iPhone. After running the update, a number of users have claimed that iPhones will no longer sync with iTunes. In some cases iPhones may sync for a short period of time, but eventually crash when attempting to delete songs.

Apple has not yet verified if the update is the cause of the crashes, or when some form of solution might be available.

How to Pwn or JailBreak Your iPhone or iPod touch 2.1 (Mac)

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Assuming you’re not happy with the method of installing new applications on your iPhone or iPod touch, there are several options for ‘Pwning’ or ‘JailBreaking’ your device, which is a nerdy way of saying you want to temporarily break the installed software to allow it to accept third party software, applications or settings not currently supported or approved by Apple.
The good news is, if you’re on a Mac it’s pretty simple. Bear in mind two things; This method does not work on the iPhone 3G for unlocking, only iPhones running 2.1 software can be unlocked. Additionally, if you use this method and your phone is bricked, ie. becomes unusable as Apple intended, they will not provide any support whatsoever.

1. Backup your iPhone/iPod touch.
2. Quit iTunes.
3. Disconnect your iPhone/iPod.
4. Download the current Pwnage Tool.
5. Do not use the older versions!
6. Download iPhone 3G OS 2.1. Download the original iPhone OS 2.1 here.
7. Use Firefox, NOT Safari to download the OS software.
8. Move the software to this folder:

~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates

9. Start the Pwnage Tool application.
10. Follow on-screen instructions form here – use simple mode if in doubt!

How To Copy Files to Your iPhone or iPod Touch

Monday, September 15th, 2008

As great as iTunes is for syncing music, photos, calendars and contacts to the iPhone or iPod touch, one thing that has been notably missing is a way to copy files to and from your iPhone or iPod. This problem now has an elegant solution, thanks to Avatron Software. Their new app, Air Sharing, gives you a quick, simple way to mount a folder on your desktop. Simply download their app and open it – two folders will be shown, Public and Samples. At the bottom an IP will be displayed – simply go to the ‘Go’ menu in the finder in OS X and select ‘Connect to Server..’ and type in the IP as it appears in Air Sharing, not forgetting the port number, 8080. In Windows, go to the Start menu and select ‘Run..’ and type in the IP address including the port number. The folders will be mounted, allowing you to copy files to and from your iPod touch or iPhone. There’s an additional bonus – check in the ‘samples’ folder on your device and you’ll find you can open or view a number of different kinds of files on your device too!

How to Put Your iPhone or iPod touch Into FDU Mode

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

After attempting a Jailbreak on a iPhone or iPod touch, you may experience problems which only restoring or putting the iPod into recovery mode will fix. A slightly less common problem is the device not booting at all, stuck on a blank screen. One way to resolve this may be to put the iPhone or iPod into FDU mode, which will allow iTunes to recognize it and then use recovery mode to restore. To enter FDU mode, simply hold down both the power and home buttons for seven seconds, then let go of the power button and hold only the home button until iTunes reports that it sees the device.
