Apple has released iPhone OS 3.1.2, its first major update to the iPhone’s and iPod touch’s software since the launch of version 3.1 and 3.1.1, respectively, on September 9. According to Apple’s release notes, the update “resolves a sporadic issue that may cause iPhone (or iPod touch) to not wake from sleep,” as well as an “intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart.” It also fixes a bug that could cause occasional crashes during video streaming. iPhone OS 3.1.2 is available now for both iPhone and iPod touch users through the update feature in iTunes.

Apple Releases iPhone OS 3.1.2, Fixes Sleep Issue
Thursday, October 8th, 2009iPod Touch $10 Update Fee: One-Time, Multiple Devices
Wednesday, June 17th, 2009It has been confirmed that the purchase of the iPhone OS 3.0 software update for the second-generation iPod touch enables the same user to update the first-generation iPod touch as well. Prior to performing any iPod touch update, iTunes 8.2 requires the user to click through to the iTunes Store, authorize a $9.95 payment to Apple, and accept new iTunes licensing terms. iTunes then downloads the iPod Software Update for iPod touch, which is specific to the first- or second-generation devices. Upon connecting a second, different-generation iPod touch, there is no additional charge to update that device’s software to version 3.0. However, another software download from the iTunes server will be performed to retrieve the separate version of the software that runs on the different device.
Apple Announces Back To School Mac/iPod Deal
Wednesday, May 27th, 2009Apple today announced the start of its annual Back to School promotion whereby students and educators can receive a free 8GB iPod touch or less expensive iPod model when purchasing a qualifying Mac computer. To be eligible for the promotion, an educator or student must purchase a new MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, or Mac Pro at the educational price and purchase an iPod at the same time. Students can then mail in their proof of purchase from their Mac to Apple to receive a rebate for the value of the iPod, up to $229. Additional qualifying iPod models include the third-generation 4GB iPod shuffle, fourth-generation 8GB and 16GB iPod nanos, 120GB iPod classic, or more expensive iPod touches; the iPod classic’s rebate is $20 short of its full price, and the rebates for more expensive iPod touches are capped at $229.
The Back to School promotion is available in the U.S. and Canada from May 27, 2009 through September 8, 2009.
Apple Warns Of Static Shock From iPod Earphones
Tuesday, May 19th, 2009Apple has posted a new support document warning iPhone and iPod users of possible shock from their earbuds. Titled ”Apple Earbuds and static electricity,” the article states that “it’s possible to receive a small and quick electrical (static) shock from your earbuds while listening to iPod or iPhone.” The article goes on to offer a basic description of static electricity, noting that the “condition is not limited to Apple hardware and static can potentially build up on almost any hardware and could be discharged using any brand of earbuds.” Finally, it suggests tips—such as keeping the device out of the wind, not rubbing it against certain materials, using anti-static hand lotion, and using a humidifier to raise the moisture content of the air—for users to try and reduce the build-up of static electricity that can lead to being shocked.
New iPhone and iPod Touch Details? iPod to Get Camera?
Friday, May 15th, 2009HardMac claims that they have heard some interesting tidbits about future iPhones and iPods from their sources.
- The future iPhone models will have exactly the same shape and size than the current iPhone 3G, despite fakes and rumors circulating.
- Apple should refresh models for the iPod nano and Touch in september. Both should now include a camera, similarly to the iPhone.
The iPhone retaining its current shape and size is perhaps consistent with the recent rumors from China, but the addition of a camera to the iPod Touch and iPod Nano is a new possibility.
A camera on the iPod Touch may make the most sense as it would bring the iPhone and iPod Touch closer together in terms of features. A camera addition to the iPod Nano, however, would be a surprise. There has been talk that Apple might be positioning video to be a killer feature in the next iPhones, and this could be an extension of that.
Apple Says Jailbreaking iPhones And iPod Touches Is Illegal
Sunday, February 15th, 2009Apple has finally, after a full year plus, publicly came out saying that jailbreaking the iPhone that you paid for is illegal. In comments filed with the U.S. Copyright Office related to a proposed new exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which would explicitly allow jailbreaking of iPhones, Apple has argued that jailbreaking constitutes copyright infringement and a DMCA violation, and is therefore illegal. The company claims that jailbroken iPhones depend on modified versions of Apple’s copyrighted bootloader and operating system software, and that these more open versions compromise safety, security, and reliability, along with making it easier for users who wish to pirate software. In the days following the iPhone’s release, Apple actively combatted jailbreaking through changes to the device’s software; it had appeared to give these measures less attention since the launch of iPhone OS 2.0 and the App Store, which provides a legal way to add applications to the devices.
iPhone And iPod touch Shares Continue To Grow
Sunday, February 15th, 2009It’s not an earthshaking surprise, but good news nevertheless, that advertising metrics show the share of Apple devices on the web continues to grow.
The latest indication is from Admob, a firm that tracks ad requests from more than 6,000 published sites in 160 foreign countries.
According to their latest report:
Worldwide requests from Apple devices grew 28% month over month to 1.2 billion in January. Building on its strong December, iPod Touch growth outpaced iPhone growth in top markets. The iPod Touch now represents 40% of Apple requests, up from 20% in September.
The Admob data confirms that the Apple iPhone (17 percent share) and iPod touch (12 percent share) are together the number one device for mobile internet useage, making 51% of all ad requests. This has to be good news for Apple, who is riding the recession along with the rest of the tech sector. Other highlights from the report indicate that Blackberrys have a 19 percent share while the G1 (HTC Touch) is the number 18 device in the U.S. with 0.9% share in December. The Google Android phone has a 3% OS share in the US, a good number for a product so new to the scene.
Apple may be rolling out even more phones to try and hold and extend past market gains. There are also the continued rumors of a US $99.00 iPhone
iPod Touch Outpacing iPhone In Wi-Fi Internet Access
Thursday, February 12th, 2009The iPod touch is becoming increasingly important next to the iPhone, at least in terms of mobile Wi-Fi access, according to AdMob. The advertising firm claims that access from the Touch grew faster than that from the iPhone in January, and now represents 40 percent of Wi-Fi requests from Apple handhelds. As recently as September, when the second-generation Touch was launched, usage was just 20 percent. The Touch accounted for 12.3 percent of Wi-Fi requests in the US during January, though just 10 percent of requests in western Europe, and 7.4 percent worldwide. Its high online presence is likely attributable to an unexpectedly large number of iPod sales in the last quarter, over 22.7 million when incorporating the Classic, Nano and Shuffle as well.
Apple’s iPod Touch Use Has Jumped In January
Thursday, February 12th, 2009Mobile advertisement firm AdMob has revealed its Mobile Metrics report for January. According to the data, worldwide requests from Apple devices grew 28% month over month to 1.2 billion in January, with the iPod touch outpacing the iPhone’s growth in top markets. The iPod touch now represents 40% of ad requests from Apple devices, doubling September’s 20% share. In early January, AdMob revealed that iPod touch requests had more than tripled worldwide from November to December; it is unclear how many of these increases can be attributed to sales of AdMob-supported applications.
