Is An Apple iPhone For $99 Coming This Summer

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

There’s word that Apple is secretly planning to launch an entry-level iPhone one that will retail for just $99. Apple has usually announced and released its iPhones at the beginning of the summer season.
According to a research note by RBC Capital Markets, analyst Mike Abramsky said that Apple would launch the entry-level device alongside an iPhone 3G performance upgrade in June or July. He forecasts that a $99 iPhone could increase unit sales by as much as 69%.
The arrival of the $99 iPhone will create a division between the high-end and low-end models for the first time in the product line. According to Abramsky, the $99 iPhone may drop 3G and GPS in order to keep the price low. The $99 iPhone will retain Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the 3.5-inch, 480 x 320 screen of the current models, according to the report.

In addition to the $99 stripped-down version, Apple will release a third generation “premium” iPhone that will include an higher resolution, 720 x 480 screen, a video camera and either 16 or 32GB of flash memory.

Next-Generation iPhone Photos Leaked Online?

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

New photos supposedly showing the back casing of the next-generation iPhone have been posted online. Mac Rumors claims that the images originate from China, showing a matte-black 16GB iPhone back casing, carrying the previously unused model number A1303. Apart from the matte black surface and what appears to be a white Apple logo, the backing is quite similar to that of the iPhone 3G in both the location of the holes and interior layout. Previous pre-announcement leaks of iPhone casings have been surprisingly accurate, however, it remains unclear whether this will actually be the rear shell of a next-generation device.

China Unicom In Negotiations With Apple Over iPhone

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Talks between Apple and China’s top mobile carrier may be off for now, but negotiations have apparently been ongoing with the country’s number two carrier, China Unicom. The iPhone could become part of the company’s launch of an iPhone-compatible 3G network as early as May 17.

According to a spokesperson for China Unicom, talks with Apple began in October last year. One point firmly in favor of China Unicom is that the carrier plans to roll out a 3G network based on the WCDMA standard—the protocol used by the iPhone—this May. China Mobile uses a Chinese-only variation called TD-SCDMA, which would require custom handsets for that carrier.

Apple Issues Update Signaling iPhone Compatibility With AT&T’s MicroCell

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Late last week, Apple issued a “carrier settings” update for iPhone users in the United States. While Apple provides few details on the contents of such updates, MobileCrunch discovered several image files in the new update package that appear to signal the iPhone’s compatibility with AT&T’s upcoming 3G MicroCell technology. The 3G MicroCell device connects to a user’s existing broadband Internet service and provides enhanced 3G voice and data coverage within a 5000 square foot range.

Device Features:

- Available unlimited minute plans – Individual or Family Plan.
- 3G handset compatible – works with any AT&T 3G Phone.
- Up to 4 simultaneous voice or data users supported.
- Device is secure – cannot be accessed by unauthorized users, easy and secure online management of device settings
- Seamless call hand-over – start calls on your 3G MicroCell and continue uninterrupted even if you leave the building.
Pricing and availability for the device and associated monthly plans have not yet been announced.

Firmware Points To Next-Generation iPhone Model

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Evidence of a next-generation iPhone model has been found in the latest version of the iPhone’s firmware. Mac Rumors notes that a string in the USBDeviceConfiguration.plist file contains information for a device labeled “iPhone2,1,” while the original iPhone carried the designation “iPhone 1,1” and the iPhone 3G was labeled “iPhone 1,2.” For comparison, the first-generation iPod touch was labeled “iPod 1,1” while the second-generation model is labeled “iPod 2,1” due to its significant hardware differences such as volume buttons, an internal speaker, and integrated Nike+iPod support. The existence of a next-generation iPhone is further supported by the appearance of a device labeled “iPhone 2,1” appearing in a developer’s PinchMedia ad serving reports, suggesting that Apple is currently testing the device for a near-term release.

iPhone 3G 8GB Heavily Discounted in Austria

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Potential iPhone 3G buyers can now get the 8GB version for a mere €1—if they live in Austria, anyway. T-Mobile, which carries the iPhone in both Austria and Germany, dropped the purchase price of the 8GB iPhone 3G today from €99 to €1, so long as the customer signs up for the €45 monthly service tariff (almost US$59).

If you decide to buy the 8GB iPhone in Austria, you can also get your first month of service for free—an additional €45 savings. Finally, T-Mobile is offering another €45 for online orders.

This, of course, has led iPhone fans to speculate as to whether T-Mobile is eager to get rid of inventory because it has too much stock, or whether it’s preparing for the launch of a new product, possibly the long-rumored iPhone nano

iPhone 3G Now The Second Best-Selling US Mobile Handset

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Apple has rocketed to the top of the US sales-charts with their iPhone 3G. According to NPD, Apple has seen its iPhone 3G become the No. 2 best-selling handset in the US. Motorola’s RAZR V3 still takes top billing as the overall best-selling mobile phone in the US.
Researchers also confirmed that one in three iPhone 3G purchasers switched from other carriers to join AT&T, suggesting that network’s subscriber numbers will have seen a hefty bump, particularly as it now seems extremely likely Apple has exceeded its stated sales target for the device.

The iPhone 3G has also managed to clench a solid 17% of the US smartphone market. Thanks to the brisk sales numbers that helped the iPhone 3G become the No. 2 best-selling handset in the US, the iPhone 3G became the top-selling smartphone in the US since its launch. The smartphone, iPhone 3G, has outpaced the likes of the Blackberry Curve, Blackberry Pearl, and Palm Centro.

iPhone Users Left Without Service in Northeastern U.S.

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

The outage with AT&T which is the exclusive U.S. provider for Apple’s iPhone appeared to have begun early this morning affecting both 3G and EDGE connections. Voice calls were still possible, but web surfing and e-mail were not. Most of the outage reports came from iPhone users. However, the issue appears not to be exclusive to iPhones, affecting other devices such as BlackBerries and N95s. The reported outages were in Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and as far west as Illinois and Missouri.

By noon service had been restored though service is still sluggish in some areas. AT&T confirmed the outage stating that it was affecting many cities and that it was a routing issue where traffic was being routed incorrectly.

iPhone Coming to Store Near You in Russia

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

MegaFon, Russia’s third largest mobile phone operator announced today it has signed a distribution agreement with Apple Inc. This is considered a enormous win for iPhone as Russia is one of the largest markets for iPhones outside the United States. This announcement comes just days after Vimpelcom said it had reached agreement with Apple on selling the iPhone in Russia.

Apple is expecting to sell 3.5 million iPhones in Russia over the next two years. Once these carriers begin their sales, this will mark the first time the iPhone is officially available for sale in Russia.

Most Canadian Users Clueless as to What iPhone Can Do

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

It appears that most of Canada’s iPhone users seem to prefer just using the multimedia device for simply talking. Despite all the complaints over the cost of using the new, faster iPhone, it appears its owners don’t seem too be using the iPhone to its full potential with web surfing, sending photos, watching videos or listening to music. Rogers Wireless recently said that just 1.2 per cent of users of the touchscreen iPhone ate up more than one gigabyte of data in the first four weeks after it went on sale July 11.

While the vast majority have been modest data users, only one iPhone user went over the six-gigabyte data allotment.

For some reason they have yet tapped into the multimedia-rich capabilities of the device and don’t seem to be in a hurry to find out more about it’s capabilities.
