Apple Says Jailbreaking iPhones And iPod Touches Is Illegal

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

Apple has finally, after a full year plus, publicly came out saying that jailbreaking the iPhone that you paid for is illegal. In comments filed with the U.S. Copyright Office related to a proposed new exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which would explicitly allow jailbreaking of iPhones, Apple has argued that jailbreaking constitutes copyright infringement and a DMCA violation, and is therefore illegal. The company claims that jailbroken iPhones depend on modified versions of Apple’s copyrighted bootloader and operating system software, and that these more open versions compromise safety, security, and reliability, along with making it easier for users who wish to pirate software. In the days following the iPhone’s release, Apple actively combatted jailbreaking through changes to the device’s software; it had appeared to give these measures less attention since the launch of iPhone OS 2.0 and the App Store, which provides a legal way to add applications to the devices.

iPhone And iPod touch Shares Continue To Grow

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

It’s not an earthshaking surprise, but good news nevertheless, that advertising metrics show the share of Apple devices on the web continues to grow.

The latest indication is from Admob, a firm that tracks ad requests from more than 6,000 published sites in 160 foreign countries.

According to their latest report:

Worldwide requests from Apple devices grew 28% month over month to 1.2 billion in January. Building on its strong December, iPod Touch growth outpaced iPhone growth in top markets. The iPod Touch now represents 40% of Apple requests, up from 20% in September.

The Admob data confirms that the Apple iPhone (17 percent share) and iPod touch (12 percent share) are together the number one device for mobile internet useage, making 51% of all ad requests. This has to be good news for Apple, who is riding the recession along with the rest of the tech sector. Other highlights from the report indicate that Blackberrys have a 19 percent share while the G1 (HTC Touch) is the number 18 device in the U.S. with 0.9% share in December. The Google Android phone has a 3% OS share in the US, a good number for a product so new to the scene.

Apple may be rolling out even more phones to try and hold and extend past market gains. There are also the continued rumors of a US $99.00 iPhone

iPod Touch Outpacing iPhone In Wi-Fi Internet Access

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

The iPod touch is becoming increasingly important next to the iPhone, at least in terms of mobile Wi-Fi access, according to AdMob. The advertising firm claims that access from the Touch grew faster than that from the iPhone in January, and now represents 40 percent of Wi-Fi requests from Apple handhelds. As recently as September, when the second-generation Touch was launched, usage was just 20 percent. The Touch accounted for 12.3 percent of Wi-Fi requests in the US during January, though just 10 percent of requests in western Europe, and 7.4 percent worldwide. Its high online presence is likely attributable to an unexpectedly large number of iPod sales in the last quarter, over 22.7 million when incorporating the Classic, Nano and Shuffle as well.

Apple’s iPod Touch Use Has Jumped In January

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Mobile advertisement firm AdMob has revealed its Mobile Metrics report for January. According to the data, worldwide requests from Apple devices grew 28% month over month to 1.2 billion in January, with the iPod touch outpacing the iPhone’s growth in top markets. The iPod touch now represents 40% of ad requests from Apple devices, doubling September’s 20% share. In early January, AdMob revealed that iPod touch requests had more than tripled worldwide from November to December; it is unclear how many of these increases can be attributed to sales of AdMob-supported applications.

5. Enter your iTunes Store Account ID and Password, then click the Authorize button

Apple’s iPhone Takes Lead In Mobile Game Downloading

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Downloads of mobile games is surging with Apple’s iPhone users leading the market, according to a report released today.
ComScore said that four out of the top 10 phones used for games are iPhones: the 8-GB 3G model at No. 1, the 8-GB iPhone at No. 2, the 16-GB iPhone 3G at No. 3, and the 16-GB iPhone at No. 7.
Other phones in the top 10 include the BlackBerry Curve 8330, the BlackBerry Curve 8310, the “smart-phone-like” Samsung Instinct M800, and the LG VX10000 Voyager.
ComScore notes that mobile phone gaming has increased 17% over the previous year thanks to the growth of mobile handhelds like the iPhone. Specifically, 32.4% of iPhone users have downloaded a game, compared to a market average of only 3.8% amongst other manufacturers. In all, iPhone users were responsible for 14% of all mobile game downloads last year. While the article doesn’t specify, the finding seems even more significant in that the App Store was only in existence for 6 months out of 2008.

How to Pwn or JailBreak Your iPhone or iPod touch 2.1 (Mac)

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Assuming you’re not happy with the method of installing new applications on your iPhone or iPod touch, there are several options for ‘Pwning’ or ‘JailBreaking’ your device, which is a nerdy way of saying you want to temporarily break the installed software to allow it to accept third party software, applications or settings not currently supported or approved by Apple.
The good news is, if you’re on a Mac it’s pretty simple. Bear in mind two things; This method does not work on the iPhone 3G for unlocking, only iPhones running 2.1 software can be unlocked. Additionally, if you use this method and your phone is bricked, ie. becomes unusable as Apple intended, they will not provide any support whatsoever.

1. Backup your iPhone/iPod touch.
2. Quit iTunes.
3. Disconnect your iPhone/iPod.
4. Download the current Pwnage Tool.
5. Do not use the older versions!
6. Download iPhone 3G OS 2.1. Download the original iPhone OS 2.1 here.
7. Use Firefox, NOT Safari to download the OS software.
8. Move the software to this folder:

~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates

9. Start the Pwnage Tool application.
10. Follow on-screen instructions form here – use simple mode if in doubt!
