Apple Asked Google Not To Use Mutli-Touch In Android, And Google Agreed

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Apple, which of course makes the signature multi-touch mobile device the iPhone, apparently asked Google not to implement it, and Google agreed, according to an Android team member.

The multi-touch capability of the iPhone gives it a key advantage over competing phones such as the G1 and the BlackBerry Storm, and it raises the question of why Google, which has devoted a lot of resources towards the development and subsequent release of Android, decided to comply with Apple’s request.
Further, the Android team member went on to say that they were relieved that Google didn’t go against Apple’s wishes, given the legal storm that appears to be brewing between Apple and Palm, which is using multi-touch technology in its new Pre phone. Even if Apple ultimately decides not to pursue legal action against Palm, the situation has likely soured the relationship between the two companies. Google, it seems, wants no part in ruining its relationship with Apple.

Apple May Try To Hinder Palm’s iPhone Challenger

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Apple usually on the defensive when it comes to intellectual-property lawsuits, is threatening to use its hoard of patents to quash iPhone competitors.
Tim Cook, Apple’s chief operating officer, pledged in January to go after companies that copy the iPhone’s patented features. Apple won its latest patent Jan. 20 for so-called multitouch technology, which lets people work the iPhone by touching the screen with two fingers and making swiping motions.
Cook’s comments don’t mean Apple will actually seek a court order to stop the Pre, which is due for release in the next few months. Instead, the company may try to intimidate Palm and other rivals into working around its patents, forcing them to cut features or delay production.
Apple is turning the iPhone into its third main business, alongside the Macintosh computer and iPod. The company surpassed a goal of selling 10 million iPhones in 2008, and may sell 28 million units this year, according to Piper Jaffray & Co.

Apple Wins Comprehensive iPhone and Multi Touch Patent

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Apple recently said that they would vigorously defend their intellectual property behind the iPhone and that has just become much easier now that the U.S. Patent Office has granted Apple the patent on their application titled Touch screen device, method, and graphical user interface for determining commands by applying heuristics.

The patent covers much of the base software for the iPhone, including the operating system and various modules for functions like contacts, stocks, the camera and media playback. The patent also describes hardware components inside and outside of the device, such as the accelerometer, the audio subsystem and the proximity sensor used to judge when a person’s head is near the earpiece.

Much of the patent revolves around the iPhone’s multi-touch interface, including basic concepts such as swipes and twists, and determining when to select one object when a finger is positioned over two. The document also highlights the value of touchscreen phones, noting that they can adapt to different applications where most phones are forced to add extra buttons or repurpose old ones.

In recent weeks concern has emerged that Apple might threaten Palm with a patent lawsuit, on the basis of similarities between the iPhone and the Palm Pre, such as multi-touch control. Apple COO Tim Cook has vowed to defend company patents, but has so far avoided any direct accusations.
