iPod Touch 2.2 Update Omits Google Maps Improvements

The iPod touch version of the iPhone Software 2.2 is available now from iTunes 8.0.2 by selecting your iPod touch under devices and clicking on the check for update/update button. It is free for users with earlier 2.x iPhone Software. Along with the release of the iPhone 2.2 firmware, Apple has published the iPod touch 2.2 update, a separate download through iTunes. The software contains most of the upgrades of its iPhone equivalent, such as autocorrection toggle, mobile podcast downloads, and improvements to mail. Also present are a variety of security and stability foixes, for components like Safari, Office Viewer and Wi-Fi connrctivity, particularly when dealing with WPA protected networks.
The update appears however to exclude any of the iPhone’s upgrades to Google Maps, such as Street View, public transit navigation or sharing information via e-mail.
The iPod touch version of the iPhone Software 2.2 is available now from iTunes 8.0.2 by selecting your iPod touch under devices and clicking on the check for update/update button. It is free for users with earlier 2.x iPhone Software.

Apple Releases Remote 1.1 For iPhone and iPod Touch

Apple has released Remote 1.1, the first update to its iTunes and Apple TV remote control application for the iPhone and iPod touch. This new version allows users to create Genius playlists and create and edit playlists in iTunes directly from the application. Remote 1.1 is available as a free download from the App Store for all iPhone and iPod touch users running software 2.0 or later.

Macworld Reviews 2nd Generation iPod Touch

Macworld has posted a review of the new iPod touch. Noting that Apple has chosen to label the device “the funnest iPod ever”, Macworld also notices that the new display appears warmer, that the device is now quite a bit cheaper than the original, and that the iPod touch now has a speaker.

Software 2.1 For iPhone And iPod touch Update Announced

Apple just announced software 2.1 for the iPhone. It promises fewer dropped calls, big battery improvement, no crashes with apps, and faster backups. The software update will be available September 12th and will be free.

If you own a first generation iPod touch you can upgrade to the 2.1 software that the second-generation iPod touch has. The software includes several new features including the new Genius playlist feature and includes a built-in Nike+iPod app for tracking a run using the built-in transceiver.

The software update is available today and is free for users of version 2 and $9.95 for iPod Touch owners upgrading from version 1.x software.

Possible New iPod Form Factor Revealed

iLounge today posted blueprints of what appear to be new form factors for the iPod nano and iPod touch. The iPod nano get tapered front and back for an all round curvier appearance, while the iPod touch gets a tapered rear surface, bringing it inline with the 3G iPhone. All in all these are likely to be genuine since the design echos the design of the MacBook Air.
